Q&A
How does Logika stand out?
Many environmental consultancies have been acquired by big engineering firms, where environmental services are secondary. We saw a gap for an independent business where the environment isn’t an add-on – it’s the sole focus. That means delivering consistently high technical standards, understanding what clients need and employing the best people. We have an unusually high level of senior staff; at least 25 per cent of our employees are in a director role and they’re all actively involved in projects. In big firms, senior leaders often drift away from the detail. We’re different – every director here stays technical. It makes us better consultants and better leaders. Last year we were recognised by Environment Analyst as one of the top 25 largest environmental consultancies in the UK.
How do you retain talent?
We don’t sell widgets – we sell brainpower. That means looking after our people. We do a culture survey and, crucially, we act on the results. We offer hybrid and flexible working, we invest heavily in office space (with a fully-stocked wine and beer fridge, although a variety of soft drinks are also available!) and we run lots of socials, including a recent weekend away on the south coast with activities like sailing and climbing. Our employee attrition is around 8 per cent, which is well below the industry average.
How do you apply your expertise beyond client work?
We take pride in using our skills to help local communities that might not otherwise have access to environmental expertise, from designing a wildlife garden for a local school to funding noise insulation for a Scout hut. We spend an average of £25,000 annually on pro-bono work. I’m a firm believer that environmental progress and social value go hand in hand.
