Q&A
How has being dyslexic shaped you as a leader?
I was diagnosed with dyslexia at seven. At school, I had to work twice as hard to keep up and constantly felt the need to prove my potential. That instilled grit, resilience and drive: I call it my superpower! As a dyslexic female founder, I’m passionate about championing diversity and inclusion. Our Shoreditch HQ, The Nest, is a creative, calm space where our brilliant 33-strong team (and their dogs) can show up and be themselves. Last year, I co-founded JEDI Matters Collective to pool resources with other like-minded SMEs and offer mentoring and workshops that support diverse talent.
What’s been your proudest moment?
Becoming a B Corp in 2019, when it was still a fledgling movement, was huge. I was handed our plaque on stage at a conference by Douglas Lamont, then CEO of Innocent Drinks and now at Tony’s Chocolonely, a real business hero of mine. It felt like a watershed moment that set the path for everything since: we’re now carbon neutral, aiming for net zero by 2040, building low-impact supply chains and developing regenerative nut agriculture projects.
How do you make your brand stand out?
I think there’s a huge cost to being dull and playing it safe. We never want to be wallpaper. Our tone is warm and playful, and we take bold risks. Earlier this year we launched our biggest media investment to date that saw giant red squirrels popping up across the country on out-of-home billboards, screens, banners and buses. It had no direct call to action, but it worked: UK brand awareness jumped from 31 to 48 per cent.
