LDC ambassador and ultra-endurance athlete Mark Beaumont has completed his 80-day challenge ahead of schedule and has been officially named the first person to cycle around the world in 80 days.
Since he began his journey at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on 2nd July, he has travelled 18,000 miles and cycled through 16 countries. His journey has seen him spend 16 hours a day on the bike and cover an average of 240 miles at a time.
Today, on his return to Paris, it was verified that he has set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe by bicycle – taking 44 days off the current record. This comes after he was awarded the Guinness World Record for cycling the most miles in a month during stage one of his challenge, when he cycled from Paris to Perth and covered a total of 7,031 miles.
Commenting on his achievement, Mark said: “This has been, without doubt, the most punishing challenge I have ever put my body and mind through. The physical and mental stamina required for each day was a challenge in itself, but I had an amazing support team around me.
“The success of cycling around the world in 80 days shows that what seemed impossible is possible and has redefined the limits of endurance sport. Each stage brought different challenges including different climates, which I had to adjust to quickly. Stage one through Russia and Mongolia was unknown territory, so to complete this phase and come out with a second Guinness World Records title is a real achievement.
“I am very grateful for the support I’ve received from people all over the world, from fellow cyclists joining me on the road to messages and wishes online. The experience has been incredible, and I’m excited to share this journey for years to come.”
Richard Whitwell, Investment Director at lead sponsor LDC, said: “We’ve supported Mark for more than a decade and while he has always pushed the boundaries of ambition, this was a completely new challenge. Over the past 80 days he has proved that with the right planning, support and sheer determination anything is possible, no matter what obstacles you may face along the way.”
Richard and fellow LDC Investment Director Pete Latham joined Mark on the road on day 77 as he cycled from Olite in Spain through to Biarritz and on to Sanguinet, just 20 miles south west of Bordeaux.
Richard added: “The opportunity to join Mark on the road was an incredible experience. He is an inspiration, not only to those in the field of endurance sport, but to everyone who has a goal in sight – be this the sporting or business world. It has been a fascinating journey, and we can’t wait to see what he has in store next.”
Throughout his challenge, Mark has raised money for his chosen charity, Orkidstudio. Please support him here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ldcfollowsmark
