The Big Sleuth roars into town

The much-awaited sequel to The Big Hoot is sneaking into town as Birmingham welcomes the arrival of The Big Sleuth – and we can barely contain our excitement.

The new city-wide trail encourages local sleuth spotters and tourists to get out and about and hunt down the 100 bear sculptures, each uniquely designed by artists including local, award winning creatives.

Whilst to many a sleuth is a detective, it’s also the word for a collective group of bears, and amongst these is the LDC-sponsored sculpture Sweet William, which has taken up home in Cathedral Square.

Like his furry friends, Sweet William is a sun bear – better known as a honey bear – whose burst of colour makes him summer selfie ready for the crowds expected to descend on the city this summer during The Big Sleuth. In charge of Sweet William’s dazzling décor was Birmingham-based mosaic artist, Caroline Jariwala.

The Big Sleuth will encourage community spirit in the city and supports local business - whilst visitors enjoy bear-spotting, local companies benefit from the trail that leads residents and tourists through hidden gems in the city and generates a huge flow of people discovering what Birmingham and its wider districts have to offer.

We’re proud to be a sponsor of this fantastic project, which is again being led by innovative creative producers, Wild in Art, and held in partnership with Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital (BCH). It follows the huge success of The Big Hoot, which raised over half a million pounds for the hospital when the owls were auctioned.

When the summer of fun and trail adventures are over, it’s hoped the bears will raise more money to support the fantastic work of the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. This is again why we’re so excited to back this project – we have supported BCH for more than 15 years, with a series of quiz nights, golf days and fundraising initiatives to raise thousands of pounds to fund the hospital’s life-changing work.

We can’t wait to hit the trail, and hope you’ll join us in what will be an unforgettable summer of sleuthing! To keep up-to-date visit The Big Sleuth.
