Brexit stirs up sales for hard water specialist

Hard water can drastically reduce the lifespan of household appliances, aggravate eczema, and taste unpleasant. But Harvey Water Softeners has found the solution: a machine that removes the unwanted minerals from your tap water. Today, it sells 18,000 softeners each year.

Over the last 40 years, the company has evolved from a distributor to a manufacturer, swapping US-made systems for its own patented design.

“We spend about £1.5m on research and development each year,” says managing director Martin Hurworth, adding that Brexit has given the business a boost.

“Our competitors are all based overseas, so they’ve seen a 20pc movement in price because of the exchange rate, while we’re accelerating sales quickly.”
