LDC Ambassador Mark Beaumont's homecoming and Guinness World Record presentation

Renowned adventurer, broadcaster and LDC Corporate Ambassador, Mark Beaumont, has received his Guinness World Record certificate after his Cairo to Cape Town ‘Africa Solo’ cycle ride was commemorated at a homecoming event at Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel this Tuesday.

Mark was presented with his Guinness World Record certificate which was achieved due to his completion of the challenge last month, which saw Mark complete the 6,750 mile route in just 41 days and 10 hours, knocking an astonishing 17 days off the previous best time set by the South African rider, Keegan Longueira, earlier this year.

Between setting off from Cairo on April 10th, Mark maintained an average mileage of more than 150 miles per day through challenging conditions and terrain, journeying through countries including Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana before reaching South Africa on May 21st.

The ride helped to raise over £35,000 for humanitarian design organisation, Orkidstudio, for whom Mark has been patron since 2010. Mark was supported by LDC, together with the Drum Property Group, Martin Currie, The Wood Foundation, The Weir Group, and Endura.

The challenge was his latest endurance cycling challenge, with previous feats including an 18,000 mile round-the-world bike race in 2008, which saw him smash the previous world record for that trip by a staggering 82 days, as well as a record-breaking ride across the Americas for a BBC documentary in 2010.

Speaking at his homecoming event, Mark Beaumont said: “It is really exciting and a wonderful relief to receive the Guinness World Record for cycling the length of Africa, from Cairo to Cape Town. There is always a nervous wait after completing to see if you will get the official nod of approval.

“Taking 17 days off the previous time is better than I hoped for and I have been blown away by the public reaction to the adventure. A huge thanks must go to everyone who has followed and supported me and my amazing sponsors, led by LDC and Drum Property.

“I pushed myself to my limits in Africa and can reflect with pride on the toughest solo challenge of my career. There is a lot of pain and hundreds of hours of solitude on the road as well as months of uncertainty in the planning, but it’s an indescribable joy when all that effort pays off. As well as the World Record, I am also proud of the profile and funds that have been raised through the Africa Solo expedition for Orkidstudio, a brilliant grassroots charity that benefits children across the globe.”

LDC are looking forward to welcoming Mark as our speaker at LDC-hosted events later this year. If you are interested in hearing about Mark’s amazing challenges please contact info@ldc.co.uk.
