LDC Corporate Ambassador Mark Beaumont enters South Africa as africa solo challenge continues

Mark Beaumont is LDC’s Corporate Ambassador and is an adventurer and film-maker. Mark is a previous world record holder for the solo cycling circumnavigation of the world, he has also cycled between the two highest mountains in the Americas, he has rowed to the magnetic North Pole, survived a capsize on a Row the Atlantic and hosted a number of network television documentaries.

Renowned adventurer and LDC’s Corporate Ambassador, Mark Beaumont is edging closer to the finish line as he continues his gruelling attempt to break the Guinness World Record for a solo 6,900 mile bicycle ride from Cairo to Cape Town in the Africa Solo challenge.

Since setting off on April 10th, Mark has aimed to cover more than 150 miles per day as he looks to set a record-breaking pace for the iconic African journey. Having now entered the final stages of the journey by entering South Africa, he currently remains on course to smash the record of 59 days and 8 hours, which was set by South African rider, Keegan Longueira, earlier this year.

The epic ride has seen Mark travel through countries including Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana since leaving Egypt. He is scheduled to complete the journey by this weekend, an achievement which would see him reach his target of finishing within 50 days.

Mark, who is sponsored by LDC, alongside the Drum Property Group, Martin Currie, the Wood Foundation, the Weir Group, and Endura, is completing the Africa Solo challenge to raise money for humanitarian design organisation, Orkidstudio, for whom he has been patron since 2010. The expedition has already raised over £30,000 for Orkidstudio’s projects.

Orkidstudio’s aim is to benefit children and communities worldwide through innovative architecture and construction. Next year, the charity will begin its third project in Zambia, building new healthcare facilities for the Sachibondu Rural Health Centre which supports remote communities near the DRC border.

Speaking about the challenge so far, Mark said: “Cairo to Cape Town is a demanding journey, but the incredible kindness I’ve received has really motivated me to carry on to break the world record, and to support the African communities in which Orkidstudio works.

“I believe the work that Orkidstudio is doing, both in Africa and internationally, is hugely important, and something which I am very proud to be involved with.”

Africa Solo represents Mark’s latest endurance cycling challenge, having previously completed an 18,000 mile round-the-world bike race in 2008, which saw him smash the previous world record by a staggering 82 days. He also set a record for cycling the Americas for a BBC documentary in 2010, and last year followed the Queen’s Baton Relay around 70 Commonwealth nations and territories in the build up to the Games in Glasgow.
