If you like to travel on two wheels, Oxford Products has a product to suit you. The motorcycle and bicycle specialist distributes a dozen brands, including the high-performance protective jeans brand Bull-it, as well as creating its own huge line of products.
Innovation is a big growth driver at the Witney-based firm. The business employs two CAD designers, who create new products using computer software that they can then prototype on Oxford Products’ own 3D printer. “We also have our own testing facility,” says boss Andrew Hammond.
One of the smartest innovations of recent years has been a new ladies legging, comfortable yet robust. “We’re seeing huge growth in sales of our clothing,” says Hammond. “Ours is more of a touring and adventure brand at the moment, but we’re moving into motorsport too.”
The business was founded by Hammond’s father, Alec, in 1973. “It started as a one-man band with a transit van,” he says. “And now we’re a global brand, selling into 65 countries.”
The company turns over £30m and exports 25pc of its products overseas.
Hammond worked his way up through the business, starting out in the warehouse, where he worked as a teenager during the summer holidays. He gained experience in every single department before taking over as managing director in 2001.
“It always gives me a warm glow to think that my father came up with this brand,” he says.
“And we’re still successful 45 years later.”Backing Business Ambition 2017
