MKM is the UK’s largest independent builders’ merchant, with 47 branches across England and Scotland.

The Business is a ‘one stop shop’ for building, timber and plumbing supplies, and stock a wide range of products from the industry’s leading manufacturers.

In May 2006 LDC took a minority stake in MKM Building Supplies.

LDC invested alongside existing backers 3i in a deal that will accelerate the business’ roll out strategy. The deal also provides an exit for the shareholders who provided start up funding to MKM in 1995.

In October 2016 MKM Building Supplies was ranked 70th in the Sunday Times Grant Thornton Top Track 250 league table. The league table is a ranking of Britain's private mid-market growth companies with the biggest sales. Benefitting from stronger construction activity, the business' sales are up 18% to £251.9million in 2015.

In February 2017 3i and LDC sold their stakes in MKM Building Supplies to Bain Capital.

The original investment has supported founder David Kilburn with the firm’s ambitious growth plans. Since 2006, revenues and profits have more than trebled.

During this time, the business has also developed from a regional to a national player, expanding to 47 branches across the country. The business has consistently grown like-for-like sales well above listed peers through superior service and category expansion, generating revenues in excess of £284million in 2016 and employing over 1,100 people.
