Backing Business Ambition - With The Telegraph

To mark our 35th year in business, we’re setting out on a journey – a celebratory tour to find 35 of Britain’s most ambitious businesses today.

Run in partnership with the Daily Telegraph, Backing Business Ambition will showcase those mid-sized companies across our business communities that are striving for success, showing real determination to grow, to export, to innovate and to lead.

From September to December, we’ll be visiting a new region every two weeks, shining a light on five remarkable firms each time and taking learnings and inspiration from their success stories.

So why ambition? From our own 35 years of investing in the UK’s mid-sized companies, ambition has been the common characteristic in every one of the management teams we’ve backed, and the secret of their ultimate success.

It’s an attitude that manifests itself in many different forms – having the courage to enter a new export market for the first time, or the boldness to invest in a new product or service that will help create differentiation.  The determination to consolidate a market and scale a business through acquisition or organic growth, or the bravery to lead market, creating an outstanding workplace culture or setting new standards ahead of your competitors.

On business parks across Great Britain, there are hundreds of seemingly ordinary businesses doing extraordinary things. These are the business endeavours we want to showcase and salute.

In times of uncertainty, it can pay to remember just how far ambition like this can take a business.

During the dark recession years of 2008 to 2009, we backed over 30 businesses, at a time when many investors pulled back from the market. Despite the challenges posed by prevailing economic conditions, these were firms who held their nerve and stuck to their plan, finding new opportunities against this backdrop.

The result: some of the mid-market’s most inspiring success stories: Quantum Pharmaceutical, one of the most successful IPOs on AIM last year, and ATP International – now one of the world’s largest corporate travel management firms, to name but two. Fortuna audaces iuvat – fortune favours the brave.

While there are undoubtedly challenging times ahead for UK business, we believe giving a message of confidence is critically important in ensuring we keep creating those success stories.

For our part, we’re also keen to show there are firms like LDC who stand firmly behind those growth businesses, ready to back the management team’s vision with a certainty of funding and a commitment to support.  We want to help more management teams around the UK access the capital, strategic guidance and operational support needed to face uncertainty and fulfil their potential. That’s how we’ll build the successful businesses of the next decade.

And it all starts with one word - ambition.
