For 2009 and 2010, LDC Manchester are supporting KidsCan. In 2009, the team raised over £15,000 through LDC's National Charity Quiz and Golf Day and in 2010 raised over £19,000 from the Tour de LDC.
1 in 500 children will be diagnosed with cancer in the UK this year. Tragically, 30% of these children will not survive. Through groundbreaking research, KidsCan is striving to reduce that figure and continued support is vital. Their aim is simple - to cure more children with cancer, improve the treatment of children with cancer, develop new treatments and be a source of information about childhood cancer.
KidsCan Children’s Cancer Research Centre was established in late 2002 to specifically support research into new and improved treatments for children with cancer. Their scientists are looking for treatments which are less damaging to the bodies of children and young adults. They aim to reduce both short and long term side effects whilst retaining the effectiveness of many current treatments.
The work carried out within the KidsCan laboratories covers a range of activities from basic research into new treatments, through to applied research focused on improving the outcome of therapies currently used in the treatment of children with cancer.
Since 2005, LDC Manchester have also supported St Ann's Hospice, The Christie and Claire House raising over £40,000 for these charities.
